Dangerous Drug Black Box Warning:

Citalopram

Citalopram is an antidepressant medication. Like many antidepressants, this medication works by increasing the amount of serotonin in the brain so that the patient feels more balanced mentally. Citalopram takes 1 to 4 weeks to begin working.

Warnings/Side Effects

Citalopram changes the chemical balance in your brain; this causes you to become physically dependent on the drug for normal functioning. It’s dangerous to abruptly stop using Citalopram for this reason; you may experience serious health problems such as high blood pressure, heart attack or seizure if you do. In addition, you may develop tolerance to this drug and need a larger dose for the same effect.

Some patients have mood swings as a result of taking this medication and may develop suicidal thoughts or impulses. Young people are more susceptible to this side effect than those over the age of 24.
